Spring Season

Asheville Empire Lacrosse is dedicated to the growth of youth lacrosse for beginner, intermediate, and advanced players. At Empire, Spring is our primary season and it is our commitment to teach the game of lacrosse while providing a great experience and instilling a love for the game.

We maintain a positive environment at all times, and our highly qualified coaches help each participant have a great time building self-confidence and friendships, learning fundamental skills required to develop into complete players and developing a passion for the game. Our season is comprised of a two-week training session followed by a 10 week season beginning mid- to late February and ending on Mother’s day weekend. Check out our individual team pages and view schedules, team rosters, updates and more.

When are games played?

There will be an average of 8-9 game days played each season, on Saturdays, with weekends off surrounding the Buncombe County School spring break calendar. Each team normally plays 2 games each weekend. In 2019, there are no game days on 04/13 or 04/20.

How are teams decided?

If you’re looking for the appropriate age level to register your son, please refer to the official US Lacrosse Age Reference Table for the right age grouping:   https://www.uslacrosse.org/sites/default/files/public/documents/rules/age-group-chart-18-19.pdf.

In Asheville, we group our players in two-year increments for youth: 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U. For high school players, they are grouped in over a 4.5-year span. Actual teams at these levels are organized by skill level. Determinations will be made over four assessment days and announced 72 hours after the last assessment day.

Where are games played?

HOME games are typically played at Fletcher Park for all youth teams and Memorial Stadium for high school players. In 2019, locations should stay the same, depending on the growth of the program and number of teams per age group.

AWAY games are played on opponent home fields in South Carolina (Spartanburg, Greenville), North Carolina (Hickory, Greensboro, Lake Norman, Charlotte) and Tennessee (Farragut).

When and where are practices?

As of right now, Empire 10U, 12U and 14U youth teams will practice Tuesday afternoons and Thursday afternoons at Fletcher Park (also known as Bob Moore Community Park) – times will be announced in January 2019. Empire 8U players will practice on Saturdays at Fletcher Park – times to be announced in January 2019.

The coaches and board are currently discussing plans for High School practices and schedules. This information will be announced in December 2019.

When does the season start?

Typically, the high school team starts one week before youth teams – right around mid February. There are usually two full weeks of practice before the first game day. State championships will be held the weekend of 05/11-12.

In 2019, youth teams (10U, 12U, 14U) will start the season with player evaluations.  Each player will be assessed over four days (the weeks of 02/17 and 2/24). Coaches will place players on appropriate teams and practices will begin the week of March 4 and the season will run thru 05/11.

8U teams will have a later start date, usually the second week of March and will run thru 05/11.

Spring Season FAQ

For boys ages 8 and under, we will offer an instructional, skill building program on Saturdays only. For the first two weeks, only a lacrosse stick and mouth guard will be needed to participate. Week 3 through the rest of the season, boys will be full gear and coaches will focus on teaching the fundamentals of the game interlaced with competitive play.

Boys ages 9-14 are evaluated over a period of two weeks at the end of February 2019. Higher skill level players will be placed on our most competitive team in each age group while novices and intermediate players will be placed on teams that will allow them to better learn the sport and further hone their skills.

At our High School level, boys will jump right into practices three times per week with up to 9-10 games scheduled for the season. Our high school team welcomes boys from all counties/cities of Western North Carolina and its surrounding areas.
